Perhaps this is the most challenging agility exercise to try at home according to most dog owners and even professional trainers themselves. However, dog parents are always amazed at this part of dog agility competition when dogs flawlessly weave through poles without hitting or dismantling any barriers along the run.
We have summarised the following easy steps on how to teach your dog how to weave poles:
First step – Properly set up the poles
You can use any toys you have at home that can be used as poles and understood as such by your dog. You can start using cups first lined in distances where your dog can easily move. Remember that this is your dog’s first time so consider lining up five obstacles or poles for now.
You can also buy those orange barrier cone toys that are available in toy stores. Just keep in mind not to use sharp objects as obstacles.
Second step – Guide your dog through the obstacles
You can’t just magically say “go”, and your dog would follow in a direction you wanted. Either with leash or without, go in and out of the cones with him following. Lure him with doggy treats as he completes one pole.
Third step – Keep saying “weave.”
This will be his cue in the future for telling your dog to go in and out of the poles. Let him get used to the circling motion first as mentioned in step 2 then repeat the cycle while saying the word.
Fourth step – Keep on practicing
Your dog will definitely need your guidance over and over again. This will take a lot of sessions before he gets the trick and do this all without your usual assistance. There will also be several occasions when your dog plays with the cones. Remember, our doggy friends’ attention spans are very short.

Patience is needed when doing this skill with a dog. Here’s another tip: Keep a lot of doggy treats with you to give your furry baby some after he completes weaving a cone.
