Teaching your dog new tricks is always a fun activity for every dog owner! Think of it as a bonding between you and your fur baby because you two will be even more closely than ever. Today, Jennifer Michaelis shares an easy trick that we can teach our dog in easy ways – this is the “Play Dead” or the “Bang Bang” trick.
Treats Are, Once Again, Your Bestfriend
Ready a lot of them in your bag. This will be your reward for every successful step your dog makes. Keep in mind that you will give this only after a successful move, not during. We are also incorporating positive reinforcement in this simple yet fun training.
Lure Your Dog To Roll
Put your dog down and ask him to roll on her side. You can say any verbal cues you taught him before to make him do this. Or better yet, use gestures such as the rolling of your hand with the treats down to the floor.
Say “Play Dead”
Make sure he hears this phrase while rolling down to the ground before you give him a treat. This will be a verbal cue to your furry baby, aside from the hand signs that you will teach later on.
Reward, Reward, Reward
Give him his well-deserved doggy treat AFTER he successfully does the play dead command.
Get Rid Of The Lure Afterwards
After a few more successful tries of the steps above, casually say play dead and see if he will do the trick without much guidance and treats luring him to do it. However, don’t completely remove the treat reward. This is just to show you that your furry baby has learned a new trick successfully!
You can also use hand signals other than the verbal cues of bang-bang or play dead. After he’s comfortable with these cues, prop up your hand in a gun position as another cue to familiarize himself with him. However, similar to the other tricks, this will not be an overnight lesson. This may require you a number of sessions before your dog remembers the trick.
