Dawn has been having trouble with her two dogs, Marlo and Harper. It’s hard for her to allow visitors inside her home because of the way her dogs behave. They are very impulsive and would often nibble on the hands of any visitor.
A dog trainer named Victoria Stilwell worked with Dawn to train her dogs. First, she sat down with the owner and had a sincere discussion. The trainer believes that Dawn’s dogs are holding her social life back. If she doesn’t address the issues, she might become a spinster, just like what her friends joked about in the past.
The trainer began addressing the dogs’ behavior towards guests. Victoria placed a mat inside the house and called it a settle mat. She began training Harper first.
Harper was quick to learn the command. Dawn also followed the trainer’s steps, but it took her a few tries to get Harper to follow. Dawn slowly added distance between her and Harper. The dog didn’t move from her position.
Marlo also underwent the same training. He understood and followed the command with ease. After that, Dawn had to command both dogs to settle.
Victoria stepped outside the door to test if Dawn can succeed in controlling her dogs. When Victoria knocked on the door, the dogs barked. However, Dawn was able to get them under control after a while. Victoria entered the house with the two dogs sitting on the settle mat.
Victoria also taught Dawn how to remove her dogs from the room if they jump on someone. It was a method of training Victoria calls the time-out. It took a few time-outs before the dogs stopped their bad behavior.
Victoria left Dawn for a few weeks. During the time Victoria was gone, Dawn had to practice the training methods she had learned. When the trainer came back, she was happy to see a calmer version of Harper and Marlo.
