Fostering rescue dogs is a very rewarding and fulfilling job. You’re not only freeing up much-needed space in animal shelters, but you’re also letting rescue dogs live in a home environment that will help them adjust quickly to their new lives when they get adopted. However, it’s also heartbreaking whenever it’s time for you to let go of your foster dogs so they can be with their new families.
A very experienced foster mom for dogs named Candice Miller says that it never gets easier. Candice fostered over a hundred dogs, and she always feels a little sad when she has to give the dogs she fosters away to their new home and family. However, she’s also happy to know that the dogs she fosters will go to a loving forever home.
Candice doesn’t choose what type of dog she fosters. Over the years, Candice has fostered adult dogs, senior dogs, puppies, and even momma dogs with puppies. Despite fostering hundreds of dogs before, nothing could have prepared for a puppy named Penny.
When Candice fostered Penny, Penny was only three-days-old. Penny wasn’t nursing from her mom because the mom was bred too early. Candice had to get out of work early and drive two hours to pick up little Penny. Although there was a big chance that Penny wouldn’t survive, Candice hoped that her dog, Kilo, would be able to help little Penny.
Kilo is a very nurturing dog and instantly took in Penny. When Kilo laid down next to Penny, Candice placed a bottle of milk next to Kilo’s belly. Thankfully, Penny pushed on Kilo and found the bottle, and started eating. Penny needed 24-hour care. Fortunately, Candice had some help to care for Penny.
Candice also made a special bed with a heating pad for Penny to sleep in, and she needed to burp Penny every time after feeding. Penny started to get stronger every day, and Candice was there to witness the first time that Penny opened her eyes. Candice was also there to see Penny’s first steps.
Although Candice didn’t plan on adopting Penny, she would cry every time she thought of the day when she had to give Penny away to her new family. Candice eventually realized that she couldn’t live without Penny. So, she decided to foster-fail and adopted Penny for good.
Penny’s perfectly happy with her new family. Thanks to Candice, Penny now has the perfect family. Penny loves her mom and her new siblings, and she also makes lots of foster friends in her new forever home. Here’s a heartwarming video showing how Penny stole the heart of her foster mom.
